Policy & Impact

My research is designed from the outset to have real-world impact. I work closely with government departments, parliamentary bodies, and public institutions to ensure that data science and AI contribute to better, fairer, and more evidence-led policy decisions.

Parliamentary Engagement

I have given evidence or submitted research to four UK Parliamentary Select Committees:

Government Department Collaborations

Department for Transport Working with the Analysis Directorate on a project investigating the affordability and cost of journeys by public transport — a priority area for the Department. This research directly informs policy on transport equity and access. I have also participated in the Department’s AI Strategy Roundtable (2023) and presented to the Data Science in Transport Board (2023).

10 Downing Street & Office for National Statistics As an ESRC No. 10 Data Science Fellow (2021–2023), I was embedded with the data science team at 10 Downing Street and the ONS Data Science Campus. I developed a case study demonstrating how public government datasets can be made more easily available and usable — work that directly shaped data-sharing practice across government.

Natural England & DEFRA I am currently collaborating with Natural England and DEFRA on a funded research project (2025–2026).

Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Based on my research demonstrating how mobile phone and social media data can be used to estimate where people are, the FCDO developed a pilot project aimed at improving estimates of the number of British nationals living abroad — a metric with direct relevance to emergency planning and consular services.

Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Developed novel methodology for generating early-warning indicators of the performance of museums and galleries sponsored by the Department, enabling more responsive and evidence-based funding decisions.

Government Office for Science & Cabinet Office Named researcher on a £796,848 Government Office for Science grant; also worked with the Cabinet Office on data science applications.

Working Together

If you work in government, a public body, or a policy-facing organisation and are interested in evidence-based research on transport, cities, data, or AI, I am very open to discussing potential collaborations. My experience spans the full spectrum — from quick consultations and written evidence to multi-year funded research partnerships.
